Probably because that is most certainly not the first camera. The image quality displayed is decades ahead of what actual photos by the first cameras looked like, and those clothes are much more late 19th century, from what I know of pre-modern fashion.
And there’s no reason why the first camera would be that big. I don’t know what exactly that image is of, but it’s not what the caption claims.

The earliest known photograph of a human being looks very cool due to the horrendously long exposure time. Said human is that shadow getting his shoes shined in the lower left.

The image shows a busy street, but due to exposure time of more than ten minutes, the traffic was moving too much to appear.

A recording of a demonstration of the NETtalk artificial neural network developed by Sejnowski and Rosenberg. The network was trained on some thousands of words (text) along with how they’re supposed to be pronounced. In the end it produced understandable, if obviously artificial English, but it’s the first recording, of what it came up with during learning, that sounds really interesting to me.

Like a child learning by trial and error, the program then found its own way to a solution. It learned the regularities of consonants and vowels before the irregularities. It went through distinct phases of babbling—got simple words first before reaching a respectable and understandable cadence. To judge by the silence of the audience, most listeners found the process uncannily realistic. It was strangely similar to a human baby progressing from babble to speech.

It’s like a baby learning to talk!

I saw the TED talk for these a while ago, but it looks like there’s a website. The “strandbeests”, like this one, are wind-powered “animals” and a great example of artificial passive walking locomotion. Also, they’re cool as hell to watch.

odios:

sciencefiction:These are fictional magazine covers from Blade Runner. They were created by production illustrator Tom Southwell in 1980-1981 and appeared in the background on a magazine stand in the city streets. (!!!!)

Wow, that’s quite the detail.

I want to read Creative Evolution.

Which is exactly why their lives shouldn’t be wasted on unnecessary wars that could be avoided.

I always wondered how exactly bombing civillians in third world countries was protecting American’s freedoms. I mean, were the Vietnamese trying to rewrite the Bill of Rights? Did some given now-dead kid from Iraq pause a threat to the right to petition? Did Nicaragua pose such a huge threat to the right of the free press in America to justify the US running guns for a terorrist oorganization whose tactics consisted of hitting “soft targets” meaning especially kids, non-compatatants and hospitals?
Really, what freedom of yours did Grenada threaten? What liberty was at stake when they bombed Cambodia?

Domino theory is the justification I’ve usually heard.

I’m aware of the existance of the theory, I just don’t see it as any sort of justification, and it still only pertains to lives of people the other side of the world from the US. Well, except in the case of Latin America, which probably explains why the US took extra care to be assholes there, what with recruiting old nazi officials as torture consultants, and suporting right wing terrorists that made it a point to put the Terror in terrorism.

Well the idea is something like Vietnam falls to communism -> Asia falls to communism -> World falls to communism -> America falls to communism, and communism is repressive etc. “tenuous” is kind of an understatement for this, of course.

Members of the Red Warriors, an antifascist gang in France, 1985. Red Warriors used violent force to remove Neo Nazi gangs from France and provide safe spaces for immigrants during the rise of white nationalism and an outbreak of violent crime against people of colour. They formed a squat called “L.U.S.I.N.E” and were considered the most effective gang to counter nazi violence, working to instill fear in their opposition.

white people who think you’re anti-racism/”not racist”, if you’re not doing this, you’re literally doing it completely wrong.
